A safety issue identified at Centennial Coal lead to the design and development of the MESH LOCATOR AND RETAINER MAGNET. Mr. Byron Mcilveen, Development Mechanical Engineer, of Centennial Coal contacted International Magnetic Solutions asking if we could design a magnetic system strong enough to keep the mesh grate in place on the ABM 25 Miner. It all came about from a person hurting himself as the old mesh locator did not retain the mesh and it fell over the front of the miner.
The purpose of the magnet is to retain and align the mesh making it easier, faster and safer to operate without limiting the workings of the ABM 25 Miner.
The MESH LOCATOR AND RETAINER MAGNET is designed to fit the miner and support the cantilever weight of the mesh as it sits in place on the miner in readiness to be bolted to the mine roof. The MESH LOCATOR AND RETAINER MAGNET received extensive trials at Centennial and as a result of these trials the MESH LOCATOR AND RETAINER MAGNET was fitted to a further 4 miners.
The MESH LOCATOR AND RETAINER MAGNET is specially designed to apply a substantial holding for to the mesh even though the mesh is made from relatively thin and sparsely positioned iron rods. The magnets incorporated in the system are the latest technology highest energy magnets available and in which International Magnetic Solutions has been specializing in since their creation. MESH LOCATOR AND RETAINER MAGNET is totally encased in a mining grade yellow urethane and is structurally reinforced with a substantial steel member.
The MESH LOCATOR AND RETAINER MAGNET is easily secured in place using 5 M16 shoulder Allen head bolts. The head of the bolts is recessed within the urethane coating providing a flat catch free surface totally eliminating any obstruction to mesh movement. The MESH LOCATOR AND RETAINER MAGNET overall dimensions are 550 x 75 x 30 mm.

Installation and Fitting
MESH LOCATOR AND RETAINER MAGNET is supplied in 2 formats.
Fitting is easy.
It is done using only 4 M20 bolts which fit into existing ABM 25 Miner threaded holes.
Itís done in only one Maintenance shift.
Thereís nothing more to add!
No change to Current Operating Procedure.
Steep Grades itís SAFE.
No hassles. The mesh will stay in place without the Danger or need for hooks, ropes or occasional hand.

Other developments from International Magnetic Solutions improved safety and production
Feedback from the Australian Coal Industry has helped developed a low cost add-ons to underground miners that has removed potential safety hazards and delays to production.
Roof Bolt Plate magnets:
IMS was approached by Hydramatic Pty Ltd in 1994 to develop a Roof Bolt Plate magnet. The purpose of these is to hold the bolting plates in place on the miner while the roof bolting machine drills the bolt into the underground mine roadway roof. These resulted in the production of the now well known Green and Red plate magnets and the star plate magnet. The Roof Bolt Plate magnets are shown below.
Joy Miner Mesh locating Magnets:
Success of the IMS mining magnets was picked up on by Engineers at Coal Mine Services Pty Ltd. Steve Brownell asked us to develop a system for the Joy Miner TRS (Temporary Roof Supports). This lead to the development of the hollow round Magnetic Temporary Roof Support mesh locator magnet.
This system is still working well.
Soon after this was developed we were approached by engineers from Beltana Mine. They were aware of the success of our developments and had a similar requirement but wanted Magnetic Temporary Roof Supports handled in a slightly different way. More like the current standard Temporary Roof Supports (TRS) on the Joy.
For this application we developed the Solid Round Temporary Roof Supports Mesh Locator.
